Change Your MCAT Test Center, Test Time or Test Date Shifting your test center or registering for a different test date or time isnt really all that difficult, providing there is space at the new center where youd like to test and availability on the dates youve provided. And there are benefits to changing multiple things at once if you need to change your test center and test date, for instance. If you change them separately, youll be charged a rescheduling fee twice. Change them together and youll only be charged once. Despite the negative impacts resulting from the combustion of fossil fuels, the policies implemented to control its use are less effective. The demand for energy keeps going up (Sorrell, 2015). This report will consider how the persistence in low coal price will impact both the importers and the exporters. On the importers side, the report will analyze how their willingness to demand will be influenced. And on the exporters side, we shall analyze how the producers willingness to supply will be reduced when the prices are low. The impact on specific businesses/ industries will also be considered. Various conclusions will be arrived at after the analysis has been carried out. Demand and Supply Analysis In the recent years, the demand for coal has gone up whereas its price has fallen. The price for any product is determined by its supply and demand force. The demand law is disregarded in this case since it holds that price should go up when demand rises. The explanation for this is on the supply side. An excess supply prohibits the price of coal from going up. On the other hand, it is a fact that oil is a substitute for coal. Bearing the fact that of late the oil prices have fallen to very low levels, it has become difficult to raise the price of coal. This is because an increase in coal prices would make consumers shift from coal to oil consumption. By assuming that good X is coal and that good X is oil, the demand will change as determined by the indifference curves and the budget line. Since coal and oil are close substitutes, an increase in the price of coal would cause a huge decline in its demand, and subsequently a huge demand for oil. For instance, Roberts (2016) argued that the presence of cheap natural gas is reducing the amount of coal production in the US. Impacts on Importing Economies Japan and India are huge importers of coal in Australia. Initially, India experienced shortages in coal and spent much on importation; this has changed in the current period. The following diagram shows that the volume of Indian coal has gone up, though its importation bill is low. These economies and many others that import huge quantities of coal from Australia will have an advantage. When imports are not expensive, the importing countries make big profits. The GDP of these economies will go up since the reduction in import prices adds up to the net exports. Since net export is a major component in the GDP calculation, its increase raises the GDP level. With low coal prices, the importing economies are able to demand more coal with the capital planned for the same initially. Otherwise, they can import the same level of coal demanded earlier and then use the remaining capital in purchase of other goods and services. With the lower prices of coal, the industries depending on it for production will experience some reduced costs of production. These industries now may have the potential to raise their production level. An increased production means that more labour skills will be required for the same. The unemployment level in these economies will fall if there will be a substantial increase in production. The other advantage is based on the benefits that consumers receive whenever an industrys cost of production falls. Reduced costs of production allow more production of goods and services. When the supply of goods is high, the price for the supplied goods and services falls. The consumers well-being is increased as they can have some extra income for demanding extra units of the same or some other product. Impacts on Exporting Economies Australia and Indonesia are some of the huge coal exporters. These economies will be disadvantaged in that they will receive lower revenue. The cost of production may become higher compared to the revenues raised. These economies will, therefore, lower their supply of coal. The goal of these economies is to maximize their wealth by supplying more at high prices. The GDP of the exporting economies will fall since the price reduction make exports cheaper, subsequently lowering the net export. The amount of foreign earning will be reduced. There is a possibility that some workers employed in this sector may get laid off until the price recovers; this is to reduce the production costs. Therefore, the result of this may be an increased unemployment rate. The economic well-being of the citizens will be reduced if coal was the main commodity of trade. This essay will therefore compare and contrast the cultural differences between the two families highlighted by Boyle in his book. Summary Boyle introduces Delaney Mossbacher portraying him as a rich American who resides in California. He has hit a man with his car who is later introduced as Candido Rincon. Delaney, who represents the wealthy class, describes Rincon as having ‘red-flecked eyes and rotten teeth’ and goes on to admit that his utmost worry is the damage caused to his car (Boyle 23). He is relieved when he finds out that Candido is still alive though in a very bad condition. The two do not seem to understand each other at first as both speak different languages. However, Candido is able to pick out the offer by Delaney to take him to hospital, which he adamantly declines. All he wants is money to which Delaney hands him a twenty dollar bill and they each go their own way (Boyle 30). The author highlights the struggles by Candido after the accident. He is unable to feed his family due to the injuries incurred. He cannot get a job anymore at the local work exchange where he temporarily worked before the crash. Delaney on the other hand is also experiencing problems. O ne of his treasured pet dogs has been killed by a coyote and he is not taking the matter lightly. Besides, the community wall has just been brought down by a fire caused by Candido. Cultural Similarities Depicted One of the cultural similarities prevalent in the book is racism. This is evident throughout the novel and in most instances brought out by the author. Delaney portrays his hatred against the Mexicans whom he views as illegal immigrants. Likewise, America comes into con tact with Mary on her first day at work and she describes her as â€Å"dirty† and â€Å"poverty stricken†. However, America argues that it is not fair for Mary to be searching for a similar job like she was as she was an American. The two scenarios draw similar conclusion based on racial prejudice. Delaney’s character of viewing people outside his social class as not being worth any attention correlates to the idea of America’s belief that anyone who is not an illegal immigrant is rich and capable of fending themselves without having to struggle. The other cultural similarity brought out is the height of problems experienced by the two couple. Candido is depressed since he can no longer cater for his family’s needs and is forced to go to the street to look for food. Similarly, Delaney is also depressed as his dog has just been killed by a coyote. Though the level of problems seems to differ, each person is bothered and distressed by the tragedy tha t has befallen them. Cultural Differences Depicted The cultural difference between the two families is introduced by the author as a theme describing the role of gender in the community. Both families live a different lifestyle in the same community. They both view and interpret the role of women in the society differently. When America decides to take up a job to help bring food to the table, Candido feels ashamed and threatened by her action. He does not seem to take it kindly that a woman should be the one feeding her family while the man is present. On the contrary, Delaney does not seem to be bothered with the fact that his wife Kyra, a real agent, is the breadwinner of the family. The cultural difference can be attributed to the level of education that each character possesses and the different social classes. Delaney appears to be educated and he even writes in the local nature magazine as opposed to Candido, who has been described as an illegal immigrant â€Å"trying to liv e the American dream† (Boyle 42). On the other hand, Candido is depicted as living on the edge and struggling to make ends meet whilst Delaney hails from the middle class clan in California.
